What
does Spyware do?
The
goal of Spyware is to gather information from an infected
PC and report it to the author of the program. There
are many ways this is accomplished. For example, a
Spyware program that wants to gather username's and
passwords will use a KeyLogging program. A KeyLogging
program does just what its name suggests, log keystrokes.
These keystrokes can contain a treasure trove of information
like passwords, social security numbers, credit card
numbers and other financial account information.
Spyware
can also display ads on your PC in hopes that you
will visit a site that you normally wouldn't. Often
these sites are full of more spyware programs and
possibly viruses. Another method of getting you to
visit sites you normally wouldn't, it through Browser
Redirects or Hijack. Browser Hijacks are very annoying
because they can change your home page and redirect
your web searches to a site that will likely install
more malicious software.
In
the process of performing these annoying activies,
Spyware can slow down your PC tremendously. Some programs
demand a large amount of CPU to display ads, track
keystrokes, reinstall itself, etc...This is one of
the tell tale signs of an infected PC.
